Director Notes

When you get the chance to teach a workshop, you wonder who the attendents will be and their skill level. Luckily, I was given 12 very capable people and while the workshop spanned 2 days and half showed up for the second day, we still managed to start two short films. In this workshop, everyone had a chance to tell a childhood story. Of them, we decided to produce two of them. This is the 2nd of the two, using 2D animation techniques. We were unable to finish the work during the workshop, since many of the members of this team didn't show up the second day.

It took 5 years later to finish it, since I felt AE didn't have the fluidness I was looking for. In some ways, the animation felt like stiff puppets and wasn't happen with it. I ended up trying to push the character designs, and using video to help compensate for it. The video really made for some rich shots, especially when moving.

In summary, it's the second in the animated series of Lao Childhood stories . Concept and voice recorded in 2013 during the Vientianale Animation Workshop, a 2 day workshop devoted to animation. The topic was, "Childhood Memory." Animation and final animation completed in 2017. The first in the series is Chasing Grasshoppers (2013).
