About the Film
Synopsis
A buffalo just wants to be a bird and fly, when he learns a life lesson that you shouldn't try to be someone you're not ..... The preproduction process was developed in a special animation workshop in March 2016 during the Vientianale International Film Festival in Vientiane, Laos.
Director Notes
When you get the chance to teach a workshop, you often shoot in the dark, since you don't know their experience level is with software, and with animation techniques. Luckily, I was given 10 very capable people and while previous workshops in Laos spanned 2 days, we decided to make it one day and work on learning Maya. However, it became apparent that only 2 students had Maya loaded on their computers, and we were stuck (like the previous workshop) to do preproduction and 2D animation. In this workshop, I asked them what was a concern in Laos and we narrowed it down to 'being yourself.' I really wished we chose 'Don't eat dog meat.'
It took only a year later to finish it, since the artist at the workshop created all the assets and knew how to set it all up. The piece didn't have a lot of animation, so I decided to ramp up the textures. The voice over was meant to be in Laotian, so after 2 failed attempts to get proper voice acting, Souliya Phoumivong, founder of 'My Home' and legendary Lao animator, offered to help.
